The Amsterdam Dungeon is an attraction on Rokin that might just give you the creeps. Most people visit the capital for its famous museums or the Red Light District, but at the Dungeon, you dive into the city’s dark past. I’ve visited the Amsterdam Dungeon a few times now, and it remains a unique experience.
Instead of a boring history lesson, talented actors and a healthy dose of humor take you on a journey through dungeons and past the executioner.
In this article, I’ll tell you [not nearly] everything you can expect and give you a few handy tips for your tickets, so you don’t have to wait in line unnecessarily long.

The Amsterdam Dungeon: Fun, Educational, and Thrilling
The city of Amsterdam attracts huge numbers of tourists and day-trippers. Most people tend to visit the same sights in Amsterdam, such as the Red Light District, museums, canal cruises, the Anne Frank House, and so on.
One attraction that many people skip is The Amsterdam Dungeon, even though it’s a unique, incredibly fun, and educational attraction. If you’re visiting Amsterdam, consider a journey into the city’s dark past. I’ve taken the tour through the Dungeon a few times with my family. It’s a blast for everyone.
What exactly is the Amsterdam Dungeon?
What exactly is the Amsterdam Dungeon?
The Amsterdam Dungeon is an attraction that takes you on a journey into the city’s (dark) past. You might sometimes hear terms like “Amsterdam horror attraction” or “Amsterdam haunted house,” but those aren’t really accurate. It’s a combination of a [sometimes grim but also humorous] history lesson brought to life by a cast of actors.
Your journey begins in a dungeon, after which you travel from one moment in Amsterdam’s past to the next. What you can expect in the Dungeon is that one moment the truth is being wrung from you in the torture chamber, the next you’re witnessing a witch burning, and later you’re caught up in a murder on the Zeedijk.
Actors
Throughout your journey through the Dungeon, you’ll be guided by actors who’ll tell you all about Amsterdam’s dark past. So it’s an interactive experience. The actors are good at what they do. In virtually every room you enter, there’s an interaction between the actors and the visitors. The actors do their best to not only give you the occasional scare but also make you laugh.
What You’ll Encounter in the Amsterdam Dungeon
A brief description of the things you’ll encounter on your journey through Amsterdam of the past. I’m sharing this from my own experience. I certainly won’t give too much away—I don’t want to spoil what you’ll experience in the Amsterdam Dungeon.
The Descent
Your journey through the dark depths of the Amsterdam Dungeon begins with the keeper of the keys. He will lead you to “the descent.” Here, you’ll make your way down into the Dungeon. Once you reach the bottom, you’ll be greeted by “the executioner.” Make sure you don’t stand out too much, or you might end up on the rack.
The Torture Chamber
In “The Torture Chamber,” you’ll discover—perhaps firsthand—the methods they used in the past to make you tell the truth… or… to make you say what they wanted to hear. Things were a bit different back then when they wanted information from you. Will you say what they want to hear, or will you stick to the truth?
The Magical Musico
The journey through the Amsterdam Dungeon leads you on to the pub “The Magical Musico.” A word of advice in this pub… be careful who you trust… or trust no one… that’s up to you.
The Courtroom
I hope for your sake that you haven’t done anything wrong, otherwise you might just find yourself dragged before the judge in “The Courtroom.” I’ve been in trouble twice in the courtroom during my visits to the dungeon. What punishment do you deserve?
The Lost Streets
Your journey continues through “the lost streets” of the Amsterdam Dungeon. Narrow alleys in the dark. That’s what it felt like in Amsterdam in days gone by. You don’t see everyone in those alleys anymore. Is everyone still there? Have you lost anyone from the group along the way?
Witch Burning
Hopefully, you’ll sink when they throw you, bound, into the water—proof that you’re not a witch. If you stay afloat, your journey might just end here at the “witch burning.” Superstition or not, the witch hunt continues even today in Amsterdam.
The Gallows Field
You’re separated from your fellow travelers and end up at “the gallows field.” Rotting flesh, bodies that have been there for a while.

Best Time to Visit the Amsterdam Dungeon
Don’t have tickets yet at the time of your visit?
Don’t have tickets yet at the time of your visit?
The best time to visit “The Dungeons” depends on whether you’ve already purchased tickets in advance. If you don’t have tickets yet at the time of your visit, I recommend arriving well before opening time. The line is shortest before opening time. If you arrive later, you’ll have to join a rapidly growing line.
Have you already purchased tickets in advance?
When you buy your tickets for the Amsterdam Dungeon in advance, you must select a time slot. This ensures you always have access to the attraction around the time you’ve reserved. You won’t have to wait in line for long. My tip is to arrive a little before your reserved time.
Plan a visit to this bizarre attraction first thing in the morning
My tip is to visit the Amsterdam Dungeon first and then check out the other attractions in Amsterdam. But of course, that decision also depends on your schedule for the day.
Minimum Age
The Amsterdam Dungeon recommends visitors be 10 years of age or older. This doesn’t mean that children under 10 aren’t allowed inside, but it can sometimes be a bit scary for them. If your child is easily frightened in dark, scary situations—especially when skilled actors draw you into every part of the experience—you might want to think twice about bringing them along.
Have difficulty walking? Check with staff first
People with limited mobility should first have a quick chat with the Dungeon staff. You’ll likely be able to complete the tour—it’s not very physically demanding—but be sure to discuss it beforehand. The tour is largely accessible by wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available at the Dungeon. Electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters cannot be used on the tour.
TIP: Tickets for the Dungeon often sell out quickly
The guided tours through dark Amsterdam often fill up fast. If you visit on a busy day and arrive a little late, you might end up waiting in line for a long time. Once it’s full, it’s full, so avoid disappointment and buy your tickets before you travel to Amsterdam.
Is the Amsterdam Dungeon worth it?
I definitely think the Amsterdam Dungeon is worth a visit. It’s an impressive journey that gives you a glimpse into Amsterdam’s past. Not dry history textbook stuff, but an interesting and exciting journey. If history lessons at school were taught this way, everyone would get an A… well… except for the scaredy-cats, that is. It’s truly an educational experience that will definitely stick with you.
Getting to the Amsterdam Dungeon
The Amsterdam Dungeon is located right in the heart of Amsterdam. The address is Rokin 78, 1012 KW, Amsterdam. Forget about parking right outside. It’s about a 15-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station. Tram lines 4, 14, and 24 also stop nearby. The Metro stops at Rokin and Nieuwmarkt as well. Public transportation is therefore the best way to get to this attraction.
